The Journal, Saturday, 6/3

Hey Folks,

The challenge is going great so far. With only two days in, I’ve already touched the two extremes.

First there was a story of around 3,000 words that flowed out as if anxious to get on the page. It was also a possible novel start.

Then a story of over 5,000 words that happened only after a false start on another story (almost 1000 words that I didn’t count).

So two days in, one great day and one day that made me whimper a bit. (grin) So far, so good.

Topic: Day 3 of the Challenge

Well, today’s going to be challenging. An hour or so after I got up, my allergies struck full force. So writing, sneezing, writing, blowing my nose, and writing will be the order of the day.

The story went pretty well today. But again, I learned something about myself.

I’ve been used to writing novels at a rate of a few thousand words per day. But a short story is not a particular length. And when I have to finish one every day, well, if it’s over around 4,000 words, it gets difficult because I’m not used to writing that many words in a day.

But I guess I’ll get used to it if I have to. I’d just rather not get used to it all at once. (grin)

Today was easier than yesterday, but considerably harder than Day 1. Mostly because today’s story was so long at just under 5,000 words.

I’m hoping more of the stories from here on out will be in the 3000 word range. If they aren’t, they aren’t, but that’s what I’m hoping for.

Trouble is, I have to do that without sacrificing physical description, etc.

So we’ll see. (grin)

Today, and Writing

Rolled out a little before 2 this morning. With this being Saturday, I thought maybe a head start was in order. However, I didn’t get to take advantage of the head start.

Moved to my outside desk at around 3. My allergies are right in the middle of me this morning for some reason. I didn’t get a lot done what with having to constantly tend to myself.

I did write an opening. Almost immediately cycled back and allowed myself to get mired in that process. So I finally decided to toss it and start over. (So kind of a repeat of yesterday that way.)

Finally moved out to the Hovel at around 6:30.

Started the same story with a different opening, and it took off. At noon, I posted the fourth scene in the story. I’ve written over 3,000 words today already, and the story isn’t close to being over. At best, it’s in the second half.

I have a feeling it’s going to be easy to go back to my daily word count goal of 3,000 words per day in July. If that were my only purpose right now, I’d be done for the day. (grin)

Got the story finished and posted at around 2:30. Long day for a Saturday.

Back tomorrow.
