The Journal, Sunday, 12/18

Hey Folks,

Rolled out at 3, and by 4 the baby wanted to go outside for awhile. We did, and then (around 5) I put her in the house and went to the Adobe Hovel to explore writing some fiction.

I started a magic realism story. I didn’t get very far (only a few hundred words) before my cigar was finished and I headed back to the house.

Then an unexpected trip to the store for a few groceries, then back home and out here (outside desk) to write this stuff, check Dean’s site, etc.

Wow. It’s been a long time since I set out to write a story of a certain length intentionally. I was invited to submit a short-short (under 2000 words) to the Mexican magazine I mentioned a day or two ago. To me, such requests are an honor, so I’m trying to come up with something appropriate.

Of course, after they’ve published it (if they do) I’ll also publish it to my website as a story of the week and independently as a stand-alone story.

This might also turn into another sequence of stories revolving around the same main character. So we’ll see.

For now I’m going to edit a bit. I don’t want to squander the pages I have in the bank.

* * *

The edit is running well (I now have 59 pages in the bank), and that’s all right because it’s “important” as it’s my job. But I’m letting it take too much of my time. Changes coming tomorrow.

I’ve tried hard for over two years to keep my fiction writing from becoming important because I don’t want to pressure myself with it. I never want it to feel like a job. It’s important to me as a release, as playtime.

Writing fiction, telling stories, is still my personal priority. But I don’t want ever to make it just another job.

I expect I’ll write fiction tomorrow before I return to the edit.

Of Interest

Not much that I could find today. Dean talks a bit about the ongoing problem at his site. You have to hit Refresh when you first get there to see his latest post. Or some of you will have to do so.
