Hey Folks,
I’m just gonna kind’a fudge this one for now. Almost completely a placeholder post.
I’m sure while we were in the Lower Gila Box Wilderness north of Lordsburg, we slathered philosophy, talked various and sundry topics to death, and took a veritable plethora of photographs.
Oh, by the way, “plethora” and “myriad” are not interchangeable. We might have taken “a plethora” of photos, or we might have taken “myriad photos” (but not “a myriad of” photos).
More and more often I’m seeing “myriad” with “a” in front of it, and it’s really annoying. It’s like when a weather forcaster says it “likely” will rain. (He means “probably”)
So anyway, there’s that.
We should be getting home today, unless a plane fell on the truck or something, in which case this will be my last post. (grin)
But if it isn’t, well, then maybe I’ll add something to it after I get back. Or maybe I won’t. Maybe I’ll get all lazy and just wait ’til tomorrow to resume my antics.
So for now I’m gonna let it go as-is.

I was intrigued by your comment on the use of “myriad”, since in French it is the exact opposite: “myriade” is only a noun (“une myriade de” is the equivalent of “a myriad of”), and can’t be used as an adjective.
After looking it up (in several different dictionaries), it seems that in fact both usages are perfectly valid in English. The noun usage is actually older, dating back to the 16th century. Here is the reference from the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

I suspect in (American) English the two words have become synonymous because it’s easier to make them synonymous than to teach proper usage. Today, many American teachers believe “infer” and “imply” are synonymous. Most dictionaries also say “likely” and “probably” are synonymous. When Daniel Webster said proper use is dictated by use on the street, I don’t think he foresaw the dumbing down that’s been going on for the past few decades. Sigh.
